My conversation with Fabrice Bonan, co-founder of Talend, at Talend Community Day 2011 on 11th october in Frankfurt:

1. Why did you decide to develop and publish an open source data integration tool more than 5 years ago? It was pioneer work in BI sector.

At that time data integration tools were very expensive, hard to learn and hard to extend. Furthermore they were like a closed blackbox for the user who didn’t have any chance to customize or extend it because everything was proprietary and hidden. Therefore many companies could not afford data integration or they were using in-house developed tools. But why should everyone reinvent the wheel when looking for a data integration solution? So we decided to provide a solution with a better price-value relationship and base it on open source so that a community can test it and deploy it for free. Our first version got very positive feedback, the download numbers were better than we dreamt and the community provided a lot of add-ons and ideas. This was the start of a successful business.

2. Talend started with a data integration tool. When did you have the plan of the horizontal extension with data quality, master data management and so on?

Long time ago ETL itself was enough for most companies but these times are gone and as more and more customers were using our data integration it was clear, that we have to deliver a full suite of data management to be successful. The idea to add on data quality and master data management came early as customers were asking for it.

The data quality tool has been developed and was released in 2008; MDM and the Unified Platform came in 2010; the Enterprise Service Bus in 2011, and now we are cloud ready, support Big Data and on and on it goes. I think data management will get bigger and bigger. But at the end of the day all our products and extensions are customer-driven.

 

3. What are the highlights of Talend 5.0 that will be released in November 2011?

There will be a lot of improvements which I cannot tell right now. But one thing is for sure: there will be a strong highlight on the Enterprise Service Bus and important innovations in Cloud and Big Data.

4. What are the topics for the future you talked about during the event?

There are three big topics that we see for the next future. It’s cloud computing, working with big data (with Apache Hadoop for instance) and the Talend Unified Platform, with should be a sole interface for all our products and enable more power, more productivity and more consistency in the development and deployment of integration.

Neben dem Gespräch mit Ross Turk, dem Senior Director of Community bei Talend, konnte ich mich am Rande des Talend Community Day 2011 am 11. Oktober in Frankfurt auch mit Fabrice Bonan unterhalten, der vor mehr als 5 Jahren zusammen mit Betrand Diard die Firma gegründet hat. Mit Fabrice unterhielt ich mich ein weinig über den Werdegang von Talend und wie die diversen Produkte aus dem Bereich Datenintegration entstanden sind. Außerdem wollte ich natürlich auch wissen, welche Neuerungen Talend im nächsten Major-Release präsentieren wird. Mit den Themen Cloud Computing, Big Data und der Talend Unified Platform nannte Fabrice Bonan zumindest mal drei Themen - aber ich habe so das Gefühl, dass uns bei Release von Talend 5 im November noch eine Überraschung erwartet... Mein Gespräch mit Fabrice Bonan, Mitbegründer des Open-Source-Datenintegrations-Spezialisten Talend, am Rande des Talend Community Day 2011 am 11. Oktober in Frankfurt: 1. Warum habt ihr euch vor mehr als 5 Jahrne dazu entschlossen, eineDatenintegrations-Software zu entwickeln und als Open Source zu veröffentlichen? Das war seinerzeit ziemliche Pionierarbeit. Zu dieser Zeit waren Datenintegrations-Werkzeug sehr teuer, schwer zu erlernen und schwer zu erweitern. Darüberhinaus waren sie alle wie eine "Blackbox" für den Anwender, der keine Chance hatte, diese anzupassen zu zu erweitern weil alle proprietär war. Aus diesem Grunde konnte sich viele Unternehmen Datenintegration nicht leisten oder sie setzen selbstprogrammierte Programme ein. Aber warum soll jeder das Rad neu erfinden wenn er auf der Suche nach eine Datenintegrations-Lösung ist? Wie entschieden uns als dafür, eine Lösung mit einem besseren Preis-Leistungs-Verhältnis anzubieten und diese als Open Source zu veröffentlichen, sodass die Community sie kostenlose testen und dafür entwickeln konnte. Gleich unsere erste Version erhielt sehr positives Feedback, die Download-Zahlen waren besser als wir es uns erträumt hatten und die Community steuerte viele Add-Ons und Ideen bei. Das war der Start eine erfolgreichen Geschäfts. 2. Talend begann mit einem Datenintegrations-Werkzeug. Wann hattet die den Plan der horizontalen Erweiterung um Datenqualität, Masterdaten-Management usw.? Früher war ETL alleine für die meisten Firmen ausreichend. Aber diese Zeiten sind vorbei und umso mehr Kunden unsere Datenintegration nutzen desto klarer wurde es, dass wir eine komplette Suite für das Datenmanagement ausliefern müssen, um erfolgreich zu sein. Die Idee der Erweiterung um Datenqualität und Masterdaten-Managment kann ziemlich schnell weil Kunden danach fragten. Das Datenqualitäts-Tool wurde als entwickelz und 2008 veröffentlich. MDM und die Unified Platform kamen 2010, der Enterprsie Service im Jahre 2011 und jetzt sind wir bereit für die Cloud, unterstützen Big Data und so geht es in einem fort. Ich denke, dass das Datenmanagement größer und größer werden wird. Aber am Ende des Tages sind alle unsere Produkte und Erweiterungen kundengetrieben. 3. Was werden die Highlights in Talend 5.0 sein, was im November veröffentlicht wird? Es wird jede Menge Verbesserungen geben über die ich jetzt noch nicht reden kann. Aber eines ist sicher: es wird einen großen Fokus auf den Enterprise Service Bus und wichtige Innovation bezüglich der "Cloud" und Big Data geben. 4. Was waren die Zukunftsthemen, über die du bei dieser Veranstaltung geredet hast? Es gibt 3 große Themen, die wir für die nähere Zukunft sehen. Das sind das Cloud Computing, die Arbeit mit großen Datenmengen (Big Data) - beispielsweise mit Apache Hadoop - und die Talend Unified Platform, die eine einzige einheitliche Oberfläche für alle unsere Produkte sein und mehr Produktivität und eine höhere Konsistent in der Entwicklung und der Veröffentlichung von Datenintegration bieten soll.
